Why people are moving to New Jersey

People ask us this every week. Some are leaving New York City. Some are coming from Pennsylvania, Florida, or farther away. Some already work in New Jersey and want a shorter day.

What the public data shows

USAFacts reporting on 2024 migration shows roughly 56,800 people moved to New Jersey from New York. The flow runs both directions, and New Jersey came out ahead by about 20,800, with roughly 36,000 people moving the other way.

The largest inflows came from New York, Pennsylvania, and Florida. These are estimates drawn from public data, not a prediction about any town or price.

Tax framing to take to your CPA

New Jersey residents who work in New York City are generally not subject to New York City resident personal income tax the way New York City residents are.

New Jersey generally allows a credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions.

New Jersey property taxes are widely discussed as high. Budget for the town you are actually buying in, not a statewide average.

Remote and hybrid workers should ask a CPA or counsel about New York convenience of employer style rules before assuming anything.

The practical reasons people give us

Commute shape. Bergen, Hudson, Essex, Union, and other counties give very different rail, bus, ferry, and driving patterns. A hybrid schedule changes which towns work.

Space. A yard, parking, a guest room, a quieter street. This is the most common single reason we hear.

Schools and daily life. We will not invent ratings. Visit, and read primary district sources.

Community fit. Language, food, houses of worship, and weekend routines matter more than most listings admit.
